MILESTONES

Over two decades bringing Taiwan's strains to the world

Bringing technology to market takes sustained research, field validation and collaboration across disciplines. This timeline follows the promise that grew into Biontech's microbial capabilities across markets.

1992

The founding promise

A daughter's tears inspired our founder to pursue safer biopesticides and microbial science. In the 1990s he worked with Taiwan's Development Center for Biotechnology (DCB) to develop Bacillus subtilis Y1336, a pesticide-grade microbial strain.

2002

Biontech is established

Biontech was founded on February 22, 2002 in the Zhunan campus of Hsinchu Science Park, and the same year launched its first microbial pesticide in Taiwan, based on Y1336, as a wettable powder and a suspension concentrate.

2004–2005

Going international, and into animal health

In 2004 Y1336 gained its first registration as a biopesticide outside Taiwan, and Japan became the first export market. In 2005 a feed additive combining Bacillus subtilis BN02 and Bacillus coagulans L103 was registered in Taiwan.

Since 2006

National biotechnology awards

Y1336 and the feed additive STRONG each received a national award in the biotechnology category from Taiwan's Institute of Biotechnology and Medicine Industry.

2009–2011

Research and entrepreneurship awards

In 2009 BIOBAC Y1336 was granted Taiwan's Tse-Xin Organic Certificate, and Biontech won the first Scientific and Technology Agribusiness Gold Medal and the Agribusiness Science & Technology Innovation Award; in 2010 it won the first Biotechnology and Innovative Agriculture Award, Gold Medal.

In 2011 Taiwan's largest fertilizer company joined Biontech as a strategic shareholder, and Biontech received the Taiwan Top 10 Horatio Alger Award.

2013–2015

International quality and organic certification

ISO 9001 certification from France's AFNOR since 2013; research collaboration with an international agrochemical company from 2014 to 2018; and since 2015 Y1336 has been certified organic by Germany's BCS and complies with the US USDA/NOP organic rules.

2017–2020

Recognition for innovation, and patents

In 2017 BIOBAC WP Y1336 won the Plant Protection Product Contribution Award 2016 in China, and Biontech received the Futuristic Inventive Technology Award from Taiwan's Ministry of Science and Technology for an innovative biological mosquitocide. Patents filed in 2018 were granted in Taiwan and China in 2020.

2020–2022

New strains and home gardening

In 2020 Biontech launched a biostimulant based on Bacillus mycoides BM02; in 2021 it introduced BACY, a Bacillus velezensis biofungicide, on the market from 2022; and in 2022 it launched the Dr. Soil home-gardening range.

2024

Global distribution and co-development

In 2024 Biontech signed a registration and distribution agreement with an international crop protection company to bring its Y1336 microbial fungicides to more than 30 countries.

Biontech also develops ODM and custom products for B2B customers in different markets, combining its own strains and formulation know-how with nutrients such as amino acids, humic substances and seaweed extracts.

Since 2024

Home & Living solutions

Biontech brought the Bacillus technology it built for agriculture into everyday spaces, developing microbes for septic tanks, grease traps and odours, and launched BionClo septic and toilet care, BionRio grease-trap fat digester and the BionClean probiotic deodorizing spray.

NOW

Expanding global collaboration

Today, Biontech continues to work with brand, manufacturing, distribution and technology partners in different markets, helping microbial technology respond to local crop and environmental needs.

Milestones are not an endpoint; they trace the long-term research, field validation and cross-market collaboration behind our work.
